US President Donald Trump has signed a broad sanctions bill targeting Russia’s economy and major buyers of its oil and gas. It gives him power to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five purchasers, including China and India, and extends sanctions to Iran’s energy and weapons sectors, as well as Vladimir Putin, Russian officials, financial institutions and the country’s “shadow fleet”.
