ScienceGlaciers retreat and rivers run dry, new water report shows
A World Meteorological Organization report says 2025 was one of the driest years for rivers worldwide in more than three decades. Terrestrial water storage has fallen since the mid-2010s, while glaciers recorded a fourth straight year of widespread loss. From 2023 to 2025, glaciers lost 1,400 gigatons of water, raising risks of floods and long-term water insecurity.
