ScienceGiant panda Bei Xia receives world-first treatment for jaw asymmetry

Bei Xia, born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in 2022, suffered injuries to its left forelimb and jaw from its mother shortly after birth and later had the limb amputated. As it grew, its lower jaw shifted left, affecting feeding. A Sichuan University team used customized orthodontic appliances and elastic bands for six months, largely correcting the deviation and restoring normal sucking, chewing and swallowing.
