PoliticsSouth Africa pushes back against US visa restrictions

South Africa has rejected new US visa restrictions targeting its officials, saying they misrepresent the country’s domestic policies and could hinder diplomatic efforts to resolve bilateral differences. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola said Pretoria expects Washington to respect its sovereignty, democratic institutions and Constitution, while urging disputes to be handled through dialogue rather than unilateral measures. The restrictions, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, target officials allegedly involved in what Washington calls “race-based discrimination.”
