Dahaidao is a 4,000-square-kilometer yardang landscape in Xinjiang’s Gobi, about 150 kilometers southwest of Hami. The formation is the world’s largest and most geologically mature of its type, and the only Silk Road example to have yielded human-habitation sites. During the Han Dynasty, a Silk Road route connected Dunhuang and Turpan through the area; Dahaidao is now a national 4A scenic attraction and China’s only no-man’s-land where visitors can legally drive themselves, offering a memorable experience.
