TechNot Just Proton: Getting to Know Valve’s New SteamOS Compatibility Layers

To run more games on the SteamOS-powered Steam Frame, Valve is adding two compatibility layers alongside Proton. One is FEX, its version of the open-source fex-emu project, which emulates x86 instructions on Arm and uses binary recompilation, graphics-library calls, and code caching to improve performance and reduce stuttering.
