A new Basel Action Network report warns that e-waste from the AI boom has been vastly underestimated. Including data-center infrastructure beyond servers and GPUs, it estimates AI could generate 395 million to 617 million metric tons of retired equipment between 2025 and 2050—around 15 to 20 percent of global e-waste—and up to 23 million shipping containers by 2050.
