Jiajin Mountain in Sichuan was the first major snow mountain crossed by the Central Red Army during the Long March. In June 1935, lacking food and clothing, the soldiers climbed from about 2,200 meters to the 4,114-meter pass through snow, hail and freezing winds. Many died from cold and oxygen deprivation, but the army completed the crossing.
