Colombian-Venezuelan businessman Alex Saab, a close ally of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, pleaded guilty in US federal court to conspiring to launder money from a bribery and fraud scheme. He admitted using bribes, shell companies and false records to win contracts tied to Venezuela’s CLAP welfare programme and agreed to forfeit $195m and cooperate with investigators.
