Forecasters say the Pacific warming pattern may be among the strongest ever recorded. NOAA says El Niño has crossed the 2C warming threshold, reaching a “very strong” level informally known as a super El Niño, and is expected to persist through March–May 2027. It could bring heavier rain to East Africa, South America and the southern US, while causing drier conditions in South and Southeast Asia, Australia and Southern Africa, with greater risks of floods, wildfires and food insecurity.
