A future quantum-safe Bitcoin system would have to migrate today’s coins through exchanges, institutional custodians, hardware wallets and key-management platforms. A Coinbase workshop with Stanford and Localhost Research reached no agreement on a specific approach, while Glassnode estimated that roughly 1.6 million BTC sat in exchange-related outputs with visible public keys. Exchanges can reduce operational exposure through address hygiene, change-output rotation and reserve management before a protocol upgrade.
