TechAudited DeFi protocols lost $885M in attacks outside their audit scopes

A new preprint examining 135 DeFi incidents from the first half of 2026 found that 46 of 68 incidents with identifiable public audits followed attack paths outside every identified audit scope. Those incidents accounted for 94.4% of losses in that subset, though the authors caution that the figure does not measure audit effectiveness or prove scope boundaries caused the losses. Excluding Kelp DAO and Drift Protocol, the share fell to 72.1%.
