The climate-controlled chamber holding Andrei Rublev’s 15th-century Trinity icon reportedly failed months ago. A German specialist repaired it, but it broke down again after his departure and he could not return because of international-relations difficulties. The icon is now exposed to 80% humidity instead of the recommended 50%–55%, causing its wooden panels to swell and warp. It has been moved to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius’s restoration workshop.
