Uganda’s independence in 1962 did not end its traditional kingdoms. Centuries-old Buganda continues to exist within the modern state, led by a Kabaka and supported by institutions such as the Great Lukiiko and a prime minister, although constitutional rules bar traditional and cultural leaders from exercising the state’s administrative, legislative or executive powers.
