Products seen as “ugly” or “bizarre” have gone viral in China, where millions of young consumers are drawn to their quirky humour and distinctive character. Taobao, Alibaba Group Holding’s e-commerce platform, said sales of such goods have topped 230 million yuan (US$34.3 million) since it introduced its Uglies Award in 2020, without defining precisely what qualifies as “ugly”.
