Welles Crowther, credited with saving more than a dozen people on Sept. 11, 2001, became known as the “man in the red bandana” after survivors recalled him covering his face while helping others evacuate. Ahead of the attacks’ 25th anniversary, President Trump posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, accepted by Crowther’s mother.
