In May 1935, after months of arduous travel, the Red Army reached the Jinsha River, a major natural obstacle on its northward journey. At Jiaoping Ferry, 37 local boatmen used six wooden boats to help more than 30,000 Red Army soldiers cross, in one of the Long March’s most critical moments.
