The Long March, which marks its 90th anniversary this year, began in 1934 as Chinese Red Army forces broke out of Kuomintang encirclement in Jiangxi. Over two years they crossed more than 10 provinces and traveled about 12,500 kilometers, enduring heavy losses including at the Xiangjiang River before the Zunyi Meeting marked a turning point.
