CultureCrossing Snowcapped Mountains

In June 1935, the Central Red Army reached Mount Jiajin and began crossing the first major snowcapped mountain of the Long March. Its 4,930-meter main peak was covered in snow year-round, with thin air. Poorly clothed and short of food, the troops endured wind, snow and hail, using chili water for warmth and wooden sticks for support. From June 12 to 18, the main force crossed the mountain over seven days and nights.
