More than 90 years ago, mistrust between the Red Army and Yi communities threatened the army’s passage through Sichuan during the Long March. In May 1935, commander Liu Bocheng and Yi leader Xiaoyedan formed an alliance at Yihai Lake and became sworn brothers, using lake water in place of wine and helping the Red Army continue north. The ceremony’s historic sites remain preserved.
