Scientists working with the LUX-ZEPLIN detector in South Dakota reported on September 1 that they had observed an unexplained particle interaction resembling the signal expected from dark matter hitting liquid xenon. They stopped short of calling it a discovery or proof of dark matter, which has never been directly observed.
