A review of 22 studies found turbulent toilet flushes can aerosolise microbes into adults’ breathing zone, where particles may remain suspended for at least 20 seconds. The aerosols could transmit legionella, influenza and norovirus. Researchers still advise closing the lid as a precaution, while warning it cannot fully contain the plume.
