Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward plans to ban short-term rentals in residential areas and near schools and important cultural sites, following more than 1,300 complaints about visitors improperly disposing of rubbish, making excessive noise, smoking where it is prohibited and trespassing. The measure could affect about 2,000 lodgings, while the ward also plans to reduce the annual rental limit in residential areas from 180 to 120 days.
