In the winter of 1934, the Red Army fought Nationalist forces for several days along the upper Xiangjiang River. After breaking through the blockade, its strength fell from more than 86,000 to just over 30,000. Every Tomb-Sweeping Day, descendants of martyrs from the 34th Division travel hundreds of kilometers to Guangxi with azaleas from home to honor the fallen.
