PoliticsMerz says Saxony-Anhalt defeat is no reason for him to resign as German chancellor

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the CDU’s defeat in Sunday’s Saxony-Anhalt election does not warrant his resignation. He said he would keep pursuing cross-party cooperation and described creating opportunities for the next generation as his responsibility and that of the federal government. Preliminary results gave the AfD 43.8% and the CDU 17.2%, its worst result in the state.
