PoliticsFACTBOX: AfD wins Saxony-Anhalt election with record 43.8%
The Alternative for Germany won Saxony-Anhalt’s state election with 43.8%, its strongest result ever in a German state and roughly double its share from five years ago. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU placed second with 17.2%, its worst result there. The AfD fell just short of an outright majority, while coalition-building is difficult because most parties reject cooperation with it.
