Russia’s school in Barentsburg, on Norway’s Spitsbergen archipelago, follows Russian educational standards and has 21 students, with one pupil in each of several grades. Children are taught local history and strict Arctic safety rules, including avoiding Arctic foxes and traveling outside the village only with an armed mountain rescue specialist because of polar-bear risks.
