ScienceNepal floods: How DNA identification of bodies works
After a glacial collapse near Langtang Lirung triggered devastating floods, more than 1,270 people have died and over 4,700 remain missing. Because many bodies are mutilated, decomposed or water-damaged beyond visual recognition, Nepalese authorities are collecting blood samples from first-degree relatives to compare with DNA profiles from remains. DNA can be recovered from soft tissue, bones and teeth, while fingerprints and dental records are also used for identification.
