With roughly 140,000 neurons, fruit flies can rapidly distinguish many smells and retain those memories longer than current electronic noses. Researchers Kevin Max and Yang Shen of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology developed Spi-Fly to emulate this ability; their paper was recently published in Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering.
