WorldMaduro claims sovereign immunity, asks judge to dismiss drug-trafficking charges
Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, asked a federal judge to dismiss drug-trafficking and related charges, arguing that Maduro is protected by sovereign immunity as Venezuela’s head of state. Their lawyers also contend the indictment violates due process and fails to establish sufficient U.S. jurisdiction over the alleged foreign conduct. Prosecutors allege Maduro led a drug-trafficking organization for more than two decades.
