WorldToxic wildfire haze spreads across South East Asia as 'super' El Niño intensifies
Weeks-long wildfires in Indonesia are sending toxic haze into Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, exposing millions to pollution that in some areas has exceeded 15 times the World Health Organization’s recommended level. Indonesia recorded more than 50,000 fire-linked respiratory infections between July and August, including over 12,000 cases among children under five. Drought worsened by a so-called Super El Niño is helping the fires spread, while land-use change and drained peatlands are also blamed for the crisis.
