German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is trying to gain domestic political support through what he considers quasi-harsh anti-Russian steps, but the effort looks extremely clumsy, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Peskov questioned why Germany had not closed a Ukrainian consulate while legal proceedings continued over recent explosions allegedly involving Ukrainians. Vladimir Putin had earlier called Germany’s decisions over a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport a gross error driven by Merz’s domestic political difficulties.
