ScienceToyohiro Akiyama, first Japanese citizen and journalist in space, dies at 84
Toyohiro Akiyama, the first Japanese citizen to travel into space, the first commercially sponsored cosmonaut, and the first journalist to file reports during a spaceflight, has died at 84. Japanese news agencies said he died of lower gastrointestinal bleeding on August 26; a funeral was held with close relatives. Akiyama was selected by TBS and flew with the Soyuz TM-11 crew after training near Moscow.
