BYD and Leapmotor increased their sales last month despite a contraction in China’s electric-vehicle market caused by weaker consumer demand. Analysts expected smaller automakers to suffer declining sales and growing losses through the rest of the year as competition intensified. BYD reported August sales of 440,293 vehicles, up 17.8% year on year and its highest level in nine months.
