WorldThe facts and science behind Nepal’s mudslide
On August 26, a glacier collapse on Nepal’s Langtang Lirung triggered an ice-rock avalanche that became a debris flow and flash flood. It travelled 22 kilometers in about seven minutes before hitting Gyirong Port in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, damaging roads and buildings and causing deaths on both sides of the border. Experts say the steep elevation drop and debris gathered along the river greatly amplified the destruction, while remote, harsh glacier-source terrain makes the exact timing of collapses extremely difficult to predict.
