WorldWhy Russia’s jet-powered Geran drones are so hard to shoot down — and what Kyiv’s falling interception rate means for the war

Russia is striking Kyiv in near-continuous daytime waves and increasingly deploying faster, harder-to-intercept jet-powered Geran drones. More than 1,500 drones were launched over four days, including about 800 jet-powered models. Kyiv recorded 13 air-raid alerts on August 27, while Ukraine’s interception rate fell to 79% on August 31, compared with 95–98% against propeller-driven Shaheds in the winter of 2026. Overnight strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed 12 people and injured more than 20, authorities said.
