The newest Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin can operate in ice concentrations of up to 10 points and break through ice as thick as 1.7 meters, its commander, Captain 2nd Rank Kirill Tkachenko, said. He added that the vessel can tackle thicker ice by repeatedly backing off and ramming through it. The ship combines patrol, icebreaking and tugboat functions for Arctic operations.
