Hong Kong retirees’ living costs rose nearly three times as fast as the city average over the past five years, driven mainly by strong demand for northbound travel, a new Hong Kong-Macau Retirement Expense Index says. The index, jointly produced by the Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong and YF Life Trustees, reached 131.6 in 2026, up from 127 in 2023 and 100 in 2020.
