A July 2026 NBER working paper finds that larger fee differences between consecutive Bitcoin blocks are associated with more competing blocks at the same height and longer waits for the next block. The observational study offers a block-level measure of changing security incentives, but does not establish miners’ motives or the cause of any individual race.
