Retired U.S. teacher Ronald Sakolsky returned to China’s Mu Us Desert and planted three saplings with environmentalist Yin Yuzhen and her husband, Bai Wanxiang. Their reunion renewed a friendship that began 26 years ago with Sakolsky’s $5,000 donation and a tree-planting effort that has since grown into a forest of more than 50,000 trees.
