Nevada has declared a state of emergency as the Hawk Fire near Reno rapidly expands in strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation. Nearly 14,000 homes have been evacuated, the blaze has reached more than 4,450 hectares, and the evacuation zone has approached the University of Nevada Reno campus. The governor has mobilised the National Guard to support firefighting and protect evacuated neighbourhoods.
