ScienceFor orangutans, saving forests means saving lives
International Orangutan Day highlights the need to protect the primates and their habitats. Orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra face habitat loss and other human pressures, while conservation projects in Malaysia are creating wildlife corridors, promoting agroforestry, restoring land and monitoring populations. Floods and landslides killed at least 58 critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans in Sumatra in 2025.
