US gross national debt has topped $40 trillion for the first time, Treasury data showed. Public debt reached $40.05 trillion on Tuesday, exceeding the Congressional Budget Office’s forecast of $39.4 trillion for the end of fiscal 2026 as borrowing, interest costs and long-term obligations increased.
