Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm after passing south of Hawaii without making landfall, but strong winds, heavy rain, flash floods and mudslides continued to threaten the islands. More than 60,000 households lost power, three hospitals switched to generators, at least one person died in a car accident on the Big Island and 19 roofs were blown off.
