HealthMongbwalu: Resilience in a small gold-mining town engulfed by Ebola
Twelve weeks after the WHO declared an Ebola outbreak in Ituri, residents and health workers in Mongbwalu, a gold-mining town in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, continue trying to contain the disease. The rare Bundibugyo strain has spread faster than in the country’s previous 16 outbreaks, making this the DRC’s largest recorded Ebola outbreak. By August 12, more than 4,400 cases and over 2,000 deaths had been registered. Mobile miners, displaced people, weak healthcare infrastructure, funding cuts and distrust are complicating the response, while recovered patients and medics continue prevention and surveillance work.
