As drought lowers Europe’s rivers, hunger stones are reappearing from the riverbeds. The Děčín stone in the Elbe near Czechia’s German border bears the warning “If you see me, weep” and records centuries of exceptionally low water, when shipping, crops and food supplies were threatened.
