Japan has sharply condemned Vladimir Putin’s first visit to the disputed Kuril Islands. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called it “absolutely unacceptable” and said the islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, belong to Japan both historically and under international law. Japan also summoned Russia’s ambassador.
