HealthHow to keep babies and children safe in heatwaves

Children, particularly those under five, heat up faster than adults because their temperature-regulation systems are less developed. Caregivers should provide fluids, encourage rest in cool shaded areas, use loose light clothing and watch for heat exhaustion. Babies may need extra feeds, should not sleep in hot prams, and need good air circulation; newborn rooms should be kept at about 16C to 20C.
