War-related damage and delays to Gaza’s legal system are forcing many women to choose between prolonged divorce proceedings and giving up financial rights. Sohair al-Bordani opted for khulu, returning her dowry and relinquishing financial support to secure a quicker separation. Gaza’s religious courts handled more than 8,700 divorce cases from October 2023 through May, despite damaged facilities, staff shortages, power cuts and scarce supplies.
