EconomyUS July deficit tops $432 billion as spending rises and tariff receipts remain negative
The US federal budget deficit surged to $432 billion in July, setting a record for the month, according to the Treasury Department. Higher government outlays and increasingly negative tariff receipts contributed to the widening gap. The budget shortfall for the 2026 fiscal year has reached $1.799 trillion so far. With two months remaining in the fiscal year, it has already exceeded the entire deficit recorded in fiscal 2025.
